Final Finished Prototype

The images below depict my final design for my Hobsons Cider box, and having tried and failed to get the rim to resemble a bowler hat, I decided to make the box work as a detachable Backgammon game board. Although the images are glued on, my proposal is that the imagery of items like the logo and the game board would be printed onto the box itself, to save on the need for paper. The idea here is that the box can be reused either as a backgammon game or as a bottle carrier. This would hopefully cut down on the amount of card needed to make the boxes, since fewer carriers will be made if others are being reused.

Prototype Game Board Idea

While considering how I might adapt my box into a game board, I first thought of Backgammon, as the board could be printed onto the underside of my box's base, while the pieces could pop-out of the 'rim'. Although I have not played the game myself, I have understood Backgammon to be a game for more mature players, due to its complex layout and reliance on strategy for its moves. This made me think that this would be an ideal game to adapt into my designs.

This is how the Backgammon board may appear when printed onto the underside of the box.


Prototype Thinking Notes

What materials will your prototype be likely to use and why are these ideal/appropriate?
 
I would use sturdy card for my design, which would be thick enough not to warp in shape so much, but still retain some flexibility in how it’s used. This could help me make my box strong enough to hold six bottles and sturdy enough to hold together. The flexibility of the card would help put the side of the packaging into the proper shape.
 
 
Is there an example of similar packaging use or precedent that has influenced your ideas to date?
 
There has been similar packaging used for carrying bottles, particularly used in shops like the Co-Op. The basis of this design I think is very good, and my idea is to experiment with its shape to try and put some branding into its design, as well as make it more noticeable and appealing to customers.
 
 
Does your prototype have the potential to be re-used, re-cycled, returned or composted?
 
The point of my design is to have it reusable for carrying bottles, in the same way that supermarkets distribute reusable bags. This would cut down on the amount of card used to make the boxes.
 
 
What are the key ideas involved in your individual prototype?
 
To establish that the box can be constructed using only card, with no glue or tape used at all. I also wanted to see if the box can be made into the shape of a bowler hat, which would act as free advertising for Hobson’s Brewery.​

Hobsons Box Prototype

Using the layout I sketched, I made a small prototype of my bottle box, using 'hooks' to hold the cardboard in place. My main aim here was to establish that the box can function well and that the pieces could hold together without the use of glue or sticky tape. However, the real box itself would need much thicker card to hold the weight of the bottles and I was also unsatisfied with the card acting as the 'rim', as it was not curving like a proper bowler hat.

When I presented my prototype to the class, they thought that the concept was good, but it could do with a more elaborate additional feature to make customers interested. I therefore started to have ideas about adapting my box so that it could disassemble into a board game, although I was still rather keen on making the box robust so that it could be reused for carrying bottles, thereby saving the amount of card used to make the boxes. However, Andy Stevenson, the module tutor, pointed out that boxes like this have already been made, so my prototype concept might not be as practical as it first seems.

RESEARCH: Cardboard Boxes with Locking Tabs

While buying some food at the University's Peer Tree, I decided to take some pictures of the packaging that was used. Although held together by a little glue, the basis of the box was that it was a single unit that folded into shape, with the lid held in place by a locking tab that easily slides into the slot, making sure that the contents of the box do not fall out. I felt that the basic concept of this box was similar to what I wanted to achieve with my own designs, getting the card to lock together and hold the box together with little-to-no adhesives used.




I later took similar pictures of a shoebox, which used the same locking tab technique. However, unlike the food box, it did not need glue to hold it together, as it folded into position and was held entirely together by its locking tabs.







MAIN BRIEF: Partition Layout Re-Designed

Prior to making the prototype for my box, I decided to redesign the Partition for the centre of the box, so that a handle could be included, as well as locking tabs to hold the pieces to the base of the box. The locking tab idea related back to my Practical Packaging Task, where I used the tabs to hold the boxes together without using any adhesives, and I also realised that the handle was vital to enable customers to carry their boxes. I also wanted to get my measurements right so that the box would be more obviously shaped like the brim of a bowler hat and also give more room for the bottles to fit in.

Note: First Sketch (Top) was too narrow in shape, so I widened it out a little (Bottom).

Slots have been reversed on designs, to make room for the handle at the top.

Practical Packaging Task

These photos depict the two box structures that I constructed from the net samples. They seemed to have been specifically designed to be held together by glue, so I tried to compensate this by inserting slits into the design which would attach to lock tabs that I had also added to the design. The tabs work very well in holding the box together, although they are not that strong since the boxes are both made from paper. This could be improved by replacing the material with cardboard, which would be more robust and easier in some respects to cut into the proper shape.

MAIN BRIEF: Development Sketches

Partition Design for Center of Box


Designed to be put together via slots. Pieces are eclipse-shaped to help make shape of bowler hat.

Finished 'bowler hat' design can include 'hook' at end so that the box can be hung up like a real hat. Also, depending on cost of materials, the box could be done in different colours to appeal to customers who want their 'hat' to fit more in with their choice of colour.

Session Task 05: Research Blog Task - 13/11/14

LBP were responsible for some sustainable packaging 1sts at the 2012 Olympics. 

Please answer the following on your blog (remember to copy and paste the Q’s  first so it’s clear what you’re answering!):

  1. How many take away meals were consumed over the course of the 2012 
    Olympic Games? 
    Answer: 14 million alone during the course of the games.
  2. How much waste to landfill were Olympics organisers expecting to have'
    to go to landfill? 
    Answer: 8500 tonnes.
  3. How many pieces of packaging were needed for the games - and by 
    supplying these what did LBF help the games achieve? 
    Answer: 120 million pieces of compostable and recyclable packaging were needed, all of which are responsibly made and all of which is composted or recycled after use.

    - How many stages are there in their ‘closed loop’ system?
      Answer: There are five stages: Supply, Dispose, Collect, Process and Re-Use.
    - What happens at each stage?
      1) Supply: Create the required packaging, which is either compostable or recyclable.
      2) Dispose: Prepare the appropriate waste streams for the packaging; Recycling, Composting and General Waste
      3) Collect: Waste collection is arranged using a waste contractor.
      4) Process: The contractor ensures that all the wastes taken to the correct facility where it is either composted or recycled.
      5) Re-Use: The compost created is used for agriculture, while the recycled material is used to make new products
    - Is this appropriate for this company? If ‘yes’ then please explain why you think so. Answer: This seems a straightforward and effective process, so it would appear appropriate for the company.

    - What are ‘bioplastics’? Is there anything that can explain further the oil and carbon savings? 
    Answer: 'Bio Plastics' are plastics made from plants. There is an additional animation link explaining the oil and carbon savings.
    Look at the other materials LBP use. Could you order these in terms of  ‘most sustainable’, explain why you’ve ordered them like this on your post.'

    Answer: Forest Wood (Most Sustainable), Plant Starch, Palm Leaf, Sugar Bagasse, Recycled Paper, Recycled Plastic(Least Sustainable). The reason for this order is that trees and plants naturally grow on the planet, making them a more sustainable source of materials, whereas plastic has to be manufactured itself, from less common materials such as oil.
  6. What is PSM and what are it’s key properties? Why is this useful? 
    Answer: Plant Starch Material (PSM) is a flexible bio based packaging, made from renewable crops. It's key properties include heat-resistance, which makes it ideal for hot-food packaging and bio disposable cutlery.
  7. What is sugar bagasse and how might it be turned into packaging? 
    Answer: Sugar bagasse is the waste material produced from harvested sugar canes. Its raw form can be turned into packaging using a process of heating, pulping and pressurised moulding.

    Answer: WRAP is a non-profit company that works to accelerate the move to make the economy sustainable resource efficient.     Answer: Incpen is a research organisation that works to draw together a number of influential companies that all have similar views on sustainable production, distribution and consumption.
  2. Are they the same as WRAP? If ‘no’ then what do you think the key differences are?   
    Answer: Incpen is more specific in its aims as it concentrates primarily on encouraging the companies in the economy to be more self-aware concerning the effect their products have on the environment.

    - Where do you stand on packaging in supermarkets? Is it a good thing or otherwise?   
    Answer: I think that packaging is necessary for a lot of products in shops, as they can protect them from damage and, where food is concerned, keep them fresh. The real problem could be that customers are not disposing the packaging in the correct way after they are used. People often put the majority of packaging straight into the main bin, rather than have them recycled or re-used, so perhaps that On the other hand though, there is an amount of packaging that cannot be recycled, which would cause a problem where sustainability is concerned.
    - Are there ways in which it could be improved (if ‘yes’ then how?).
       
    Answer: I feel that manufacturers could try to reduce the amount of packaging required to the bare minimum, and possibly try to use more materials that can be recycled.
  5. Do you know what you can recycle domestically after you’ve eaten/drank all those goods you (or your family) buy from supermarkets?   
    Answer: My family uses domestic recycling bins for all the rubbish that can be recycled.
    - Does your Council or university offer-up recycling options? If ‘yes’ then what are they? Could they be improved upon at all in some way?   
    Answer: Worcester University has recycling bins placed in areas like the canteen and the Student Union, and there are also recycling bags provided in the halls of residence. However, I sometimes feel that the recycling bins are not evenly spread out across the University, and in some rooms there are more bins than required, while other parts of the University do not have any recycling bins.

    Answer: The factsheet concerning 'Reusable Packaging' is appropriate for my project since the basis of my designs is to create packaging that can be reused again and again in transporting products.

  8. After watching the film, do you feel that better designed packaging that uses less resources etc is the only way to improve the way we consume goods – especially food?   
    Answer: I certainly believe that there are various solutions to improving how we consume our goods. In the video for instance, Tristram Stuart suggests that we need to stop wasting the food itself, so perhaps something should be organised to make use of left-over food that is still perfectly edible. That could help ensure that we do not overstock on food that is not needed and send it instead to customers who do require it. On reflection, we have to try all the possible ways to decrease waste of resources, as there is on clear single solution.

MAIN BRIEF: Initial Rough Sketches

'Bowler Hat' Design
Box designed to resemble bowler hat logo of 'Hobsons Brewery'. This would draw public attention towards the company and encourage them to look in the shops for their products and buy them, as well as encourage them to reuse their carrying bags and boxes more. Sketches show design from side-on and above.



Pop-Out Cards and History of Company

Idea that box can include pop-out cards that can be used numerous times. Could be either playing cards or drinking mats for example. Also, side of box could feature information on company's history. This would encourage customers not to instantly throw out their boxes and instead find ways of reusing them.



Game Board
























Interior of box could unfold into game board or mat. Could involve drinking games or more simple games like Ludo.


Additionally, a small discount could be offered to those reusing the boxes to carry new bottles, such as a 50p to £1 discount. This could be advertised on the box.
